History

Britannia 2023 was designed by the team that created Britain's 12-sided £1 coin, the world's most secure coin. Philip Nathan, the designer of the award-winning Britannia design from 1987, demonstrates Britain's strength as a nation with a shield bearing the Union flag and an olive branch representing peace.

The Britannia gold coin was made in 999.9 pure gold with four new features. Below Britannia's flowing gown, the lower left hand of the design is a trident representing her naval history. As viewers change their perspective, the trident becomes a padlock, emphasising was is known to be the coin's secure nature. The 3-dimensional effect on the coin indicated by the movement of waves and finer details of the Union flag on Britannia's shield has been carefully highlighted with tincture lines.
